# Mulch done right: depth, timing, and the volcano mistake

Mulch is the fastest way to make a yard look finished. It is also easy to get wrong. Three rules cover most of it.

## The short answer

- Mulch in mid-spring, after the soil warms.
- Around trees, 3 to 4 inches deep, never touching the bark.
- Mulch holds moisture and keeps weeds down, so beds need less work all summer.

## When to mulch beds in Massachusetts

Mid-spring, once the soil has warmed. Mulching cold, wet soil keeps it cold longer. In Framingham that usually means after the spring clean-up.

## How deep, and the one place it never goes

Around trees, extension guidance is 3 to 4 inches deep, pulled back so it never touches the bark.

The volcano, mulch piled up against a trunk, keeps the bark wet and invites rot and pests. Pull it back into a flat ring, like a donut, not a cone.

## Why mulch saves work all summer long

UMass Extension covers mulch as a weed tool: a good layer blocks the light weed seeds need, and holds moisture in the soil so beds need less watering.

- Edge the bed first, so the mulch has a clean line.
- Weed before you mulch, not after.
- Top up, don't pile up: refresh thin spots instead of adding a full layer every year.

> Mulch is the yard job with the biggest look-better-fast payoff.
