# Massachusetts lawn fertilizer rules: why your lawn gets nothing from Dec 1 to Mar 1

Massachusetts has real rules for lawn fertilizer: a winter pause, phosphorus limits and distance from water. Here is what they mean for a Framingham yard.

## The short answer

- The state fact sheet says no plant nutrients on turf from Dec 1 to Mar 1, and never on frozen or snow-covered ground.
- Phosphorus on an existing lawn needs a soil test from the last 3 years showing need, or a new lawn being started.
- Keep 20 feet from water when broadcasting, 10 feet with a drop or deflector spreader.

## The winter pause: December 1 to March 1

The state's fact sheet for turf says no fertilizer (any plant nutrient) goes on from December 1 to March 1, and never on frozen or snow-covered soil. Some summaries read the date window as phosphorus only, so we go by the state fact sheet's wording.

In practice: any fall feeding happens in November or earlier, and spring feeding waits for March.

## Phosphorus needs a reason, and a soil test

On an existing lawn, phosphorus is allowed only with a soil test from the last three years showing the lawn needs it, or when you are establishing a new lawn.

## How far to stay from water and wells

- 20 feet from water when broadcasting.
- 10 feet with a drop spreader or a rotary spreader with a deflector.
- 100 feet from a public water supply.

## Fertilizer is not weed control in Massachusetts

Weed control, crabgrass preventer and grub control are pesticide work. Anyone applying them for hire needs an MDAR pesticide license. Ask to see it.
